Check How to Fix ‘Microsoft Store Not Downloading Apps or Games’ Issue
The Microsoft Store, formerly known as the Windows Store, is the official marketplace for downloading games, applications, movies, and more. It is common to find errors, many of which are difficult to fix. We are here to help you with any Microsoft Store errors. Windows Store, Microsoft Store whatever you want to call it, is not the most popular store out there as it is plagued with bugs, glitches, and a tendency not to work. It does have some good stuff (like these free apps) though, and if you’re a gamer, you may need to access it to download games from Microsoft’s stables like Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War 4.
Check the internet connection
It’s impossible to browse the Microsoft Store, much less download apps without an active internet connection. So if your download is stuck on a slope, your first port of call should be to check your PC’s internet connection.
Open other applications that depend on the Internet and check if they work. Better yet, start your web browser and see if you can visit web pages. Restart your router or try other Wi-Fi troubleshooting tips if you can’t access the internet via Wi-Fi. For wired connections, unplug the ethernet cable or modem and plug it back in. If the ethernet connection is still slow or not working, refer to the tips in this guide to troubleshoot ethernet connectivity problems.
Disable VPN or Proxy
A proxy or VPN connection could also interfere with the download and installation of the application from the Microsoft Store. Close your VPN app or go to Settings> Network & Internet> VPN to disable a VPN connection from the Windows settings menu. In the Network and Internet menu, go to the Proxy tab and uncheck the Use a proxy server option. With VPN and proxy servers disabled, try downloading from Microsoft Store and check if it works.
Force exit from Microsoft Store
If your computer has Internet access, but the Microsoft Store still does not download applications, close the store and start it again. Right-click the Start menu / Windows logo and select Task Manager. On the Processes tab, select Microsoft Store and click the End Task button in the lower right corner of the window. Reopen Microsoft Store and try downloading the apps again. Proceed to the next solution if the apps won’t download or are locked as pending.
Check configuration and storage space
If the Microsoft Store still won’t download or your computer doesn’t have enough storage space. That is a no-brainer. So if your apps get stuck in the download queue, launch File Explorer and confirm that you have enough storage space on your hard drive to accommodate the apps.
If you have multiple hard drives connected to your computer, be sure to configure Windows to save new applications to the drive with enough storage space. Go to Settings> System> Storage and select Change where new content is saved. Click the “New apps will be saved to” drop-down option and select the drive you want the Microsoft Store downloads to be saved to.
Clear Microsoft Store cache
Microsoft Store generates and stores temporary files (called Cache Data) on your computer. These files help the Microsoft Store run faster on your computer. However, when these files get corrupted, they sometimes cause the Microsoft Store to malfunction.
Clear the Microsoft Store cache and check if that restores the app downloads and installation. Close the Microsoft Store windows and type wsreset in the search box. Click Run as administrator in the search results and wait until the Microsoft Store Reset window disappears from your PC screen. Windows will start the Microsoft Store automatically after clearing the cache. Try downloading an app and see if it works.
Check the date and time settings
The Microsoft Store may not process app downloads if your computer has the wrong date and time settings. Launch Windows Settings and go to Time and Language. In the Date and time section, be sure to check these options: Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically. One more thing: scroll down to the Synchronize your watch section and select the Synchronize now button. That will immediately sync and update your PC’s date and time with the Windows time server. Go back to the Microsoft Store and check if you can download apps now.
Reset Microsoft Store
Still can’t download apps from the Microsoft Store? You should restart the application. When you reset an application, Windows will delete the application’s data and settings from your computer. That could help eliminate the problems causing the app to malfunction.
- To reset the Microsoft Store, go to Settings> Applications> Apps & Features and select Microsoft Store from the list of applications.
- Click Advanced Options to open the Microsoft Store System Settings menu.
- Scroll down to the Reset section and click the Reset button.
- Click the Reset button one more time to begin the reset process.
- Then start the Microsoft Store, sign in with your Microsoft account details, and see if you can now download and install app updates from the store.
Run the Windows Store troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in tool that diagnoses and fixes problems with the Microsoft Store or apps downloaded from the store. It’s called the Windows Store app troubleshooter. You will find it hidden in the Troubleshoot menu of your PC settings.
Go to Settings> Update & Security> Troubleshoot and look for Windows Store apps in the “Find and fix other problems” section. Select the tool and click Run the troubleshooter.
Update Microsoft Store
Yes, you need to update Microsoft Store just like you do any other application on your computer. Otherwise, you may experience problems downloading (other) apps if you run an outdated version of the Microsoft Store.
- Launch Microsoft Store, click on the three-dot menu icon, and select Downloads & Updates.
- Click the Get Updates button and wait for the Microsoft Store to scan your PC for outdated apps and games. This may take a minute or two.
- When the scan is complete, check if the Microsoft Store is in the update or download queue. If an update is available for the Microsoft Store, the installation will start automatically. You can also click the download icon next to Microsoft Store to manually activate the installation.
Reconnect your Microsoft account
This involves signing out of your Microsoft account from the Microsoft Store app and signing in again. Click the profile icon in the upper right corner of the Microsoft Store app and select your account.
- Click Sign out to remove your Microsoft account from the Microsoft Store app.
- Go back to the Microsoft Store home page, click the profile icon, and select Sign in.
- If the account is saved on your computer, select the account and click Continue to continue. Otherwise, click Microsoft Account to use a different account with Microsoft Store.
- Provide your account credentials and click Sign in to reconnect your account to the Microsoft Store.
